Located in the southern hills of the Arno River and on the highest hill of the Boboli Gardens, Forte is the largest fortification in town, built by architect Buontalenti in the early 16th century.
Initially designed to protect the Medici families in case of attack ( infact it used to be connected with the Old Palace and Vasari corridor ) the Forte was closed between 2008 and 2013 but it is now open again to host contemporart art exhibitions.
Entrance fee is totally affordable and gives you the possibility to enter as many times as you wish during the season and to access the Boboli gardens as well. A small bar open between 18.30 and 20.00 serves a good selection of wines and a rich aperitivo and a short calendar of jazz concerts is up in July and August.
